The sustainability of crops supported under VACS depends on an ecosystem of mutually supportive research, policy, production and effective demand to promote roll out and consumption of the opportunity crops. VACS has mobilised extensive policy support and significant new financing for research and crop development, and the VACS-BD work will build on this by developing customer demand for the crops: closing the circle of "if the farmer grows, who will buy?"
